This innovative technology greatly influenced our society rich and poor alike. Everyone was drawn to using social media as a form of expression and communication but “How does it really affect us personally and our relationship with our family, friends, co-workers, and community?”.

Based on personal observation and experience, the following are the positive and negative effects of social media in our lives.

Social media lives a positive impact on social media users. The social networking sites allow you to communicate and remain in contact with friends as well as meet new people.  Social media blogging can develop your creativity and talent or be informed with interesting information through reading. Photo sharing and video sharing or “VLOG” can boost your confidence and acceptance of self-image. Social media can also increase your quality of life by easy access to all the information needed. All information is easily accessible through videos, blogs and search engines. If you are a student, it can help improve your technological skills. If you are a businessman, it can easily increase your contacts as well as your revenue. If you are a blogger, vlogger or social media influencer, it can elevate your social status as well as your financial resources utilizing your social presence. The quality of your personal life improves tremendously.

While on the other hand, there are negative impacts of social media platforms in your personal lives like increased levels of depression and anxiety, poor sleep quality, dissatisfaction with body image, cyberbullying, and FOMO. “FOMO (Fear of Missing out) is an anxious feeling you get when you feel other people might be having a good time without you.Increase the level of depression and anxiety due to overexposure to unnecessary information gathered from social media. Poor sleep quality due to lack of discipline and stimulating contents of the social media that triggers the flow of adrenaline in your blood. Dissatisfaction with body image due to the presence of body shaming in social media. Cyberbullying due to social discrimination. In this digital age, FOMO often leads to a constant checking of social media to see what your friends are doing. It can also be addictive. Your constant checking and interacting on social sites having no idea of how much time you spent on social media is already a sign. When it comes to a relationship with family and friends, it greatly hinders your personal contact with them. Instead of having a personal conversation, you choose to be with your mobile phone or instead a message sent via social network. The social medial also change the real definition of friend or friendship. “Accepting and being in contact with someone in the social networking site is already called friendship”.
